Evolution of an idea

I love to see how an idea evolves into a final product. Usually for me it begins by making something that turns out to be really, really ugly (or at least misses the mark). So I thought I'd share the evolution of one of my current items.

Today I spent some time procrastinating by cleaning up my computer's folders. Along the way I came across photos of some early versions of my paper maché bowls. So here you have it, the bottom image is the early ancestor of my current gold leafed paper bowls. Yikes! It was the first time I made a larger paper bowl and didn't have much of a sense of direction with color or where to apply the gold leaf. I knew it was all wrong, but it took a while before I got a feel for what kind of balance I wanted to strike. I kept this guy around for quite some time thinking that I might be able to turn it into something, but I eventually had to put it out of it's misery.

It's really reassuring to look back and see how things have progressed, especially when I'm in the middle of developing new ideas.
