Open Studio Pics

Yesterday's open studio was so much fun. It's always nice to open the doors and meet new people (including lots of the other artists in the building). Sarah and I always love the chance to spruce up the space (we actually vacuumed! A miracle!) and do a little extra decorating. I even scored one of Sarah's beautiful brand new necklaces.

Studio Sunday

I'm spending a lot of time (um, all the time) working these days. November always ends up being a month of rushing to get things done in time for the holidays. I've also recently signed up with Instagram (upintheairsomewhere) and am a little addicted. I love the way it sweetens up my iPhone shots.

Busy Season

Ah, September. It's not only my birthday month (today actually! yay!) but it is also the official start of crazy busy season for me. Right about now I have several wholesale orders on my plate + Renegade craft fair here in Chicago (Sep 11 & 12!) + I'm trying to get ahead on fall/holiday season. It's pretty much non stop for me from now through the end of the year. I love it :)

Working

Ben was in the studio today to play with his new motion film camera and he managed to get a few shots of me working.

My heart still flutters a bit when I finish one of those paper bowls. My studio mate Sarah also uses gold leaf in her work so there are always little bits of gold all over the floor. I think if we had a studio mascot it would be gold leaf.

Under (Bubble) Wraps

We recently moved things around in the studio and in the process I took down some sculptures. They've been sitting on my table with temporary protection until I get around to packing them properly. I really like the way the bubble wrap filters the colors.

New Studio Curtain

With the gray winter approaching I decided that I needed to add a splash of color to the studio. My curtain was a little sad and too short to hide my shelves, so I added a stripe of bright coral fabric. It makes me happy.

Studio Scraps

When I make a Point Vessel I'm always left with two little triangular shaped paper maché scraps. I keep them in the studio in a little pile under my desk hoping to one day discover a perfect use for them. This week I pulled them out and experimented. I gold leafed one side of a few, stacked them, and turned them into a little hanging sculpture. I liked how the gold leaf reflected onto the paper next to it. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but for now I'm enjoying having a few stacks hanging in the window of the studio.

Open Studio: Before & After

The open studio went really well! I hadn't met anyone in the building yet so it was really fun to walk around and meet all our neighbors. Sarah and I spent the day turning the studio from workspace into a mini gallery to show our new work. It was a good excuse to finish up some sculptures I'd been working on.

New Studio!

Today we applied for a new studio space! If all goes well, Sarah (Cursive Design), Ben, and I will be sharing a new studio space less then a mile from our apartments. I'm nervous but excited about the opportunities this new space will make possible. I'm looking forward to opening my studio up to the public in ways I can't do from home. I'm also looking forward to working closely with my great friend Sarah whose work I admire. 2009 is already shaping up to be an exciting year!

Studio

I've been working like crazy getting ready for the Renegade fair. This shot was taken while I was working on a new addition to Up in the Air Somewhere. These are small paper bowls that are gold leafed on the inside. I'm loving how they just glow.
